Who Is Laureen Knudsen?
Laureen Knudsen is the creator of The Essential Professional Method™, an executive educator, keynote speaker, and framework creator focused on workforce transformation and Professional Identity in the age of AI.
She built her career by building what didn’t exist yet. Starting in software in the 1980s, she became the person companies called to create the teams and functions, now considered essential infrastructure, that no one had built before.
Early on, she kept getting pulled into executive meetings without knowing why. A colleague finally explained it: she could translate what the technologists said into what the business needed, and back again. No one called that a skill. It lived in no job description. That ability to create value technology could not replace, and the fact that it had been there all along without a name, is the seed of what she now calls Professional Identity.
Over 30 years she proved it inside Fortune 1000 companies, including six years as a global evangelist at Broadcom. Along the way she was named to Top 100 Women in Tech and the Power 50, joined the Forbes Technology Council, and published in Forbes and CIO. Now she puts all of it into Becoming Essential and the method behind it.
Why I Built This
I thought I was going to retire. I left my last corporate role, took a few months off, and by the start of the year I was restless. So I joined The Conference Board to run executive councils part-time, and that is when the calls started.
People I had worked with around the world were being laid off, or were quietly miserable in roles that no longer fit. They did not want their old jobs back. They simply had no idea what to do next. I started sharing the same thinking I had used to architect my own career, and the change was immediate.
Person after person came to me over a matter of months. Every conversation sharpened the work: where someone stood, how steady or shaken they felt, and how to move them to a place of real hope by the end. What began as a way to help a few people became a practice, and eventually The Essential Professional Method, the book, and the training program.
I can only sit with one person at a time. This is how I reach everyone else.
What I Believe About Work and Technology
The answer to technological change has never been to compete with the technology. It is to strengthen and communicate the human capabilities technology cannot replicate.
I have lived through wave after wave of it: the PC, the internet, cloud, agile, and now AI. Each one was going to change everything. And each time, the people who came through stronger did the same quiet things. They paused. They took honest inventory of what they brought. They looked clearly at where the work was heading, and repositioned around the value only they could offer.
That is why the method is technology-neutral by design. Whatever comes after AI, the process still holds.
Because here is what I know after 30 years of watching it happen: disruption does not end careers. It ends the ones you were meant to outgrow.
